The Dalai Lama has recently been touring the UK and whilst being interviewed by the BBC’s Clive Myrie, made his views very clear on the kind of ‘credentials’ that he feels are important in a female world leader. About 5 mins into the interview the Dalai Lama is asked if a future reincarnation could be female, to which the celebrity monk replies ‘Yes, but she would need to have an attractive face - otherwise not much use’. Mr Myrie asks him if he’s joking and you can see he’s visibly shocked when he realises the Dalai Lama is being completely serious!
It turns out it’s not the first time he’s said it either - a quick search online for ‘sexist Dalai Lama’ brings up links to other blog article from the US:
These comments are disgraceful and deeply disturbing from anyone in the public eye - let alone someone who travels the world preaching equality and the importance of ‘inner beauty’. It would be great to see someone challenge him on his degrading remarks - just because he’s a celebrity monk, he should not get away with such disgusting speech. After all, he’s a politician and should be held to account.
